Dr. Nnanna E. Igwe, often referred to as “The Divine Hero,” is a distinguished medical professional, scholar, philanthropist, and community leader whose life and work reflect resilience, service, and the transformative power of education.

Born in Ameka Town, Ezza South Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Nigeria, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Igwe Awo, traders and peasant farmers, Dr. Igwe’s early years were marked by significant hardship. At the age of seven, he was herding family cattle instead of attending school because his parents could not afford formal education. It was only at the age of nine, following the sale of the family cattle and the intervention of his late elder brother, Mr. Vincent Igwe, that he was given the opportunity to begin his educational journey.

Once enrolled, his academic brilliance quickly became evident. He consistently ranked first in his class, earned a double promotion from Primary Four to Primary Six, and completed his primary education with distinction. His exceptional performance continued through secondary school, where he obtained eleven distinctions in the Junior Secondary School Examination and nine distinctions in the Senior School Certificate Examination. Despite losing his mother during this period, he remained committed to his studies and excelled academically.

His outstanding achievements earned him a scholarship to study Medicine and Surgery at Nnamdi Azikiwe University College of Health Sciences, Nnewi, where he graduated as the Best Graduating Medical Doctor and received a Gold Medal from the late Dr. Dozie Ikedife in recognition of his academic excellence.

Dr. Igwe later received an overseas scholarship from the Ebonyi State Government to pursue postgraduate studies at Imperial College London, United Kingdom, where he obtained both a Master of Science (MSc) degree and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Medicine. He is a Member of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (MRCEM), a European Board Certified Emergency Physician (EBCEM), a member of the European Society for Emergency Medicine, and currently serves as a Consultant Emergency Physician with Medway NHS Foundation Trust, Kent, United Kingdom.

Beyond medicine, Dr. Igwe has distinguished himself through leadership and community service. He served as President of the Ebonyi State Union UK from 2013 to 2017, where he helped establish scholarship opportunities for indigent students and strengthened the organisation’s sustainability. He also served as President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo UK and Northern Ireland from 2017 to 2021, leading initiatives that promoted Igbo culture, deepened diaspora engagement, and increased the organisation’s visibility and influence. Among these initiatives were the World Igbo Day Festival in London and the vision for an International Conference Centre for Igbos in the United Kingdom.

Passionate about education, healthcare, human empowerment, and community development, he has mentored numerous graduates and young professionals, supported students through bursary programmes, and championed initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of vulnerable individuals and families. He has also supported food palliative programmes designed to assist those facing hardship within their communities.

Dr. Igwe is married to Dr. (Mrs.) Ugochukwu Igwe, and they are blessed with four lovely children: Chidindu, Obinna, Adaeze, and Chukwuka.

As a member of the Board of Ogemek Charity Foundation UK, Dr. Igwe brings his wealth of professional expertise, leadership experience, and passion for service to the Foundation’s work. He supports efforts to expand opportunities for vulnerable individuals and families, encourages meaningful partnerships, and contributes to programmes that create lasting impact in communities across Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
