As conversations around youth unemployment, economic hardship, and widening skill gaps continue across Nigeria, practical empowerment initiatives are becoming increasingly important in creating sustainable opportunities for young people.

It is against this backdrop that Ogemek Charity Foundation launched its free Skills Acquisition and Empowerment Programme in Enugu State, an initiative that is already making meaningful impact in the lives of young beneficiaries.

Since officially commencing the programme on May 4, 2026, the foundation has welcomed over 20 young people into hands-on training in Fashion Design and Information Technology at its training centre.

For many of the participants, the experience has gone far beyond what they initially expected. Several trainees admitted they assumed the programme would be similar to many conventional learning environments where teaching remains largely theoretical.

However, upon resumption, they were introduced to a practical and engaging system that allowed them to begin working with tools and equipment from the early stages of training.

Participants in the fashion class resumed practical sessions with access to sewing machines and other learning materials, while trainees in the Information Technology category have been learning with laptops and digital tools that allow them to practice in real time as they learn.

Beyond the classroom experience itself, one of the most encouraging aspects of the programme has been the visible progress many participants are already making within a short period.

Some trainees who joined with little or no prior experience are gradually producing simple practical projects while building confidence in their abilities.

The empowerment programme, however, reflects the foundation’s broader commitment to helping young people acquire relevant skills, become self-reliant, and build sustainable futures for themselves and their communities.

Importantly,  The initiative also aligns with key global development priorities, particularly Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education), which promotes inclusive and equitable access to quality learning opportunities, as well as Sustainable Development Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), which encourages productive employment, entrepreneurship, and youth empowerment.

 As unemployment and economic challenges continue to affect many young Nigerians, initiatives focused on practical skills development remain one of the most effective ways to promote self-sufficiency, reduce poverty, and strengthen communities at the grassroots level.

The current training cycle will run for 90 days and is being offered completely free to participants. In addition to the training sessions, the foundation is also focused on long-term sustainability through mentorship opportunities, alumni engagement, peer learning, and support systems designed to help beneficiaries continue growing after completing the programme.

Ogemek Charity Foundation therefore calls on philanthropists, development partners, corporate organisations, institutions, and well-meaning individuals to support the initiative through donations, sponsorships, training resources, partnerships, and other forms of collaboration.

With greater support, more young people can gain access to practical skills, economic opportunities, mentorship, and the resources needed to build better futures and positively impact their communities.
